Federal Government of Nigeria signs MOU to End Breast Ironing

Over a period of three years, Teenage Network with funding from ActionAid Nigeria deployed social behavioural change communication programs to drive change in harmful traditional practices and norms in Pigba-Sama and Kpaduma II communities in the Federal Capital Territory. During this period, the girls confided in Teenage Network to have been subjected to breast Ironing privately as a measure to reduce their vulnerability to sexual violence. 1 in 3 girls been ages 13-17years had experience this practice without reporting. According to the United Nations, breast ironing is one of five major underreported sexual violence related crimes in the world.
As a result of Teenage Network’s interventions, the communities openly denounced breast ironing, also the Federal Government of Nigeria represented by the Minister for Women Affairs signed a memorandum of understanding with these communities, vowing to prosecute whoever is caught perpetrating the act. Furthermore, Teenage Network intervention created more awareness about breast ironing with about 20 national and international media house publishing about this harmful practice.
